A New Era in Cambodia: Senate President Sen Reflects on Youth, Experience, and Leadership

Phnom Penh: On August 22, 2024, Senate President Hun Sen shared a profound message on social media that reiterated an important lesson about growth, learning, and the evolving dynamics between generations. He stated, “If you want to learn to swim, jump into the water remains true,” suggesting that practical experience is essential for mastering new skills.

However, he also pointed out an evolution in wisdom with a modified take on a familiar proverb: “the young can walk fast and know the road, and the elder has experience.” This shift reflects a broader perspective on the interplay of youth and experience in current Cambodian society.

As Cambodians mark the one-year anniversary of a new generation taking the reins of the country, it is essential to recognize the impactful changes occurring during this pivotal transition. The departure of senior leaders from the U.90, U.80, and U.70 age brackets—those aged 70 and above—signifies a realignment in leadership. The new generation is now at the forefront of navigating Cambodia’s future, guided by fresh energy and a sense of responsibility.

Here are some key achievements of this new leadership:

1. Peace and Stability: Maintaining peace, political stability, security, and social order has been paramount. The new generation understands the importance of a harmonious society for sustainable progress.

2. Economic Management: Macro-economic stability has been preserved, with efforts implemented to prevent inflation and safeguard the purchasing power of the Riel currency, essential for everyday transactions and livelihoods.

3. Sustained Growth: Despite facing challenges stemming from regional and global economic uncertainties, continued economic growth remains a noteworthy accomplishment.

4. Financial Prudence: The new leadership has secured national income and maintained cash flow in the National Treasury, ensuring that essential expenses, including payroll for civil servants and armed forces, are met without sacrificing reserves, even as demands increase.

5.Drawing from his own extensive experience, Senate President Hun Sen emphasized the critical nature of efficient cash management for governmental operations. He proudly noted that senior leaders have left behind sufficient resources for the new generation to manage expenses sustainably, promoting a strategy of mobilizing income while preserving cash reserves.

With more than four decades in leadership and a significant history of governance, Senate President Hun Sen expressed that he is transitioning responsibilities to the younger cohort as he focuses on his health at the age of 72. He clarified that the tasks he faces now, while still significant, are only about 50% of the intensity of his previous roles.

Senate President Hun Sen's reflection on the proverb about youth and wisdom culminates in addressing the challenges of leadership. He highlighted that some elder statesmen, particularly those from extremist opposition groups, can mislead young people, emphasizing the need for a responsible approach to leadership that combines youthful vigor with seasoned insight.

As Cambodia continues to evolve, the interplay between the energetic ambitions of youth and the valuable insights of experience will remain crucial in steering the nation toward a prosperous future. With leaders who not only walk fast but also know the way, Cambodia is poised for a bright and stable trajectory ahead.
